Southerns Beekeeping Association

Southerns Beekeeping Association (‘sba’) – Indemnity form

Please note: Attendees have been advised that they must wear CLOSED shoes for the Apiary work. Takkies with laces are not suitable, boots are good, and Wellington or Gum Boots are best. Attendees have been advised to wear long-sleeved shirt and long trousers (long pants, eg denim jeans or cargo pants) under the beesuit. If wearing only a ‘jokkie’ ie. Bee veil top, you should wear two layers of long pants – jeans are not suitable in this case.

  1. INDEMNITY

During the FIELD DAY, you will be participating in Field Activities involving our indigenous African Honey Bee (Apis mellifera scutellata). SBA and its appointed representatives will take every precaution for your safety whilst in the vicinity of the beehives however there is an inherent risk in working with these bees, as this is a defensive bee, and is renowned for attacking with little provocation. Whilst it is unlikely that anyone will be stung, by the very nature of the activity, there is a remote possibility of this occurring.  You will be required to be properly attired in suitable protective clothing to protect you from the effects of any beestings you may suffer. You should be attired in suitable protective clothing (beesuit and beekeeping gloves) prior to entering the apiary. You will be required to wear the beesuit and beekeeping gloves throughout the experience and may only remove any items of the beesuit or gloves when advised by the presenter that it is safe to do so.

In addition, you may be required to travel from the training venue to the Apiary site. Such travel may be in your own vehicle, or it may be in a vehicle owned and driven by another delegate on the training course, or one owned and driven by the organisation.

Any persons with a known highly allergic or anaphylaxis reaction to beestings should not attend the Bee Experience.

We therefore request that you sign the Indemnity below. An incomplete or unsigned Indemnity will result in you being excluded from the activities in the Apiary, with no liability to SBA, and without any option of a refund of Field Day fees:

I, the undersigned, wish to participate in the Beekeeping Experience, and in any activity relating thereto. I participate voluntarily and at my own risk.

I shall not hold SBA, their appointed staff, officials or representatives, responsible for any mishap, injury or loss of life that may occur in the course of, or as a result of, my participation in the above said Beekeeping Experience, and also indemnify SBA and their appointed staff / officials / representatives, against any claims, actions, proceedings, liabilities, damages or expenses by any party howsoever arising out of or in conjunction with the above said activity.

I do hereby authorise SBA to take the appropriate first aid response and to contact and/or transfer me to the relevant doctors, ambulance services or medical facility in the event of an emergency. All medical costs will be for my own account.
